Asphalt Roofing products that are properly installed will provide years of protection.

There are certain issues of roof care and maintenance of which a homeowner should be aware, that will extend and maximize the performance of your roof:

• Keep gutters and roof areas clear of fallen debris so that water can drain properly
  
• Keep trees and bushes trimmed back away from the roof surface to prevent damage to roof
  
• Inspect inside your attic and outside under the soffit for signs of water leakage such as water stains or wet insulation. Roof penetrations and flashings are most vulnerable for water intrusion
  
• Limit walking on the roof to avoid damage to roofing materials
  
• In the event of installation of a new element to the roof (such as satellite dishes, TV antennas, solar panels, etc.), make sure to properly flash to maintain the integrity of the roofing system

Inspect your roof annually and after severe weather conditions to detect any potential leaks before they develop. Make sure that all silicone on flashings is in good condition and reseal if necessary. Look at overall condition of shingles... are there missing and/or cracked shingles that need replaced?

Where problems are identified, call in a competent roofer to make an actual on-roof inspection, and perform any repairs that are necessary.
